Donghia’s Carosello Lamp

West Week at the Pacific Design Center is coming up so I thought I’d take a preview trip. I love this Carosello lamp from the Donghia showroom, which is made out of Murano glass. Murano glass was originally heated and hand-blown in Venice. However the process (it takes two weeks to fire-up the ovens for production) caused so many blazes that the factories were relegated to the island of Murano. Perfect Symmetry http://www.donghia.com/

Paper Magazine in Los Angeles

Lots of Paper Magazine events this week. It’s always fun to see how this magazine-blog-tour de force-cultural powerhouse views Los Angeles through their tinted New York glasses. (I bet if they had real glasses they would be round, like John Lennon’s.)

I’m always impressed by what they find…

If you can, go check some of these events out!

Pixel Burst by Yves Behar

What is it with iconic designers and outdoor furniture? Lately it seems like the last frontier of furniture design. Philippe Starck told me once that he found outdoor furniture fascinating–particularly American outdoor furniture–because it was so ugly. He wanted to create something that would look just as lovely indoors as outside. Eh voila! The Robinwood Collection, which looks a little bit like French antiques made for a medieval jousting tournament, is awesome.

Holy Yves!

Holy Yves!

Now Yves Behar enters the fray. Best known in my mind for designing the Bluetooth accessory The Jawbone, this new collection for Orange 22, entitled PIXEL BURST by Yves Behar, uses a series of holes to create a tessellated effect. The aluminum benches look surprisingly fresh and modern, without evoking any feeling of retro-kitsch. -Stylechica

Ode to Philippe Starck

Dearest, loveliest Philippe.
Your chairs are so elegant.
They don’t look very comfy.
But who cares!
They are all sharp clean angles,
Wonderful alloys of aluminum and teak, stainless steel and plastic, resin and beeswax.
Mitterrand and Prada must be so jealous.
You make stuff cheap too.
Hurray for Target!
We love you and your wicked wit.
