An awesome band that according to one former Music Executive: "Is the best unsigned band in L.A."
At their gig last night at O’Brien’s Irish Pub in Santa Monica, the lead singer’s soulful pipes reminded me of Eddie Vedder and the band’s relentless percussion kept my head in the clouds while my feet moved to the groove.
I’ve known the percussionist Brad/Bradley/Be-Radly (he has a plethora of monikers now) since childhood. He’s turned into quite a skilled beat man.

If men in odd masks throwing one another across the stage and women peeling off layers of cheap fabric and tawdry lace to reveal cellulite pocked thighs appeals to you, head down to the Mayan Theater in downtown L.A.
This is one of the most unusual shows that StyleChica has ever attended. I’d like to call it WWF with a Mexican twist. The cast of characters is positively Hemingway-esque. There is the gigantic female producer in a black tank top cruising around the stage and pumping her her fire hydrant-sized arms up and down. There are six bald security guys in black, moving people out of the way when the wrestlers jump off the ring and into the crowd. When the wrestlers jump into the pit, folding chairs scatter and people jump out of the way. For some reason, StyleChica was in the pit. There are "little people" who wrestle, and some guy whose name is Little Pirate in Spanish (Piratino? Spelling?), who has a series of skulls on the side of his stretched out wresting pants that really remind me of a pair of pajamas my little brother used to have in the 80s. Then there is Mystico, the hot wrestler (I guess). Although, you never know for sure because he’s got a white mask on. If a wrestler looses his mask, it’s like they’ve taken his manhood. There are also a lot of cross dressing wrestlers.
In between the wresting acts, there are Burlesque strip teases. And the guy who emcees the show is the voice of Sponge Bob.

Check out the brand Ports 1961. Their recent summer ad campaign, photographed along the Nile and against the backdrop of the pyramids, looked sharp. They’ve mixed luxe ornamentation with modern tailoring and the clothes have an old world quality. Classy.
The Fall collection, entitled Rue de la vie, has lots of soft shapes. I like look 12, 15, 31–actually pretty much the whole collection.
The creative director is pretty cool too: friendly, glamorous, and kind of looks like a European movie star.

This title may be misleading. When I use the words Environmental Fashion, I’m talking about how when there is a synthesis between what you wear and your climate, temperature, light ratio and terrain. It sounds very scientific, but actually, its a wonderful way to look fresh and a la mode.
For example in Seville, I noticed women wore lots of bold colors: strong, toro-like, red dresses, saturated yellow sundresses as delicious as a Starburst; startling cobalt blue, like the color of the ocean right at the edge of the horizon. The fabrics blew in the breeze: light linen, sheer cotton, silk and satin. It matched the environment perfectly. In Seville, the earth is chalky and red, the sunlight filled with heat, the foliage green underneath layers of dust.
The next thing I knew, I was buying blousy white cotton shirts at Mango. But it seemed like a perfect idea at the time.
So if you live in Prague, please wear those funny little fur hats and swingy coats. In New York? Lots of sleek, built for speed attire. LA? Jeans and tees, cotton and desert wear. And Spain? Ruffles actually work here.
A brand for you if you’ve got an oeuvre for the mod. Paramita has stores all over Spain and on this trip, I spotted their shops in Seville, Granada and Barcelona. Another bonus for the brand, they are open during Spain’s interminable Siesta–a fact of life that cuts down on valuable shopping time.
The distinctly Spanish vision of Paramita reminds me of Dali or Picasso. The clothing is used as a canvas with bold splashes of color, quirky lines and dynamic shapes, inter-playing as if it was made to be work of art.
However, these items should be used as an accent to an ensemble, not as an entire outfit. I also recommend the purses, which are a good bargain. On this trip, I bought a saucy tennis dress that can double as a sundress in black with dramatic swoops, green tendrils, and a pair of juicy red lips on the hem.

Sorry about the absence, StyleChica was in Spain (yes I know, life is hard). I return bearing great news, Quiksilver board shorts have now spread to the Mediterranean–Hallelujah. StyleChica is very grateful. However, she never had a problem with those cute little black Lycra shorts.
